About Alastair Smith

Born in Australia, Alastair lived in New South Wales and South Australia before moving to England in 1998 where he joined the British Army and served in the Infantry for over 25 years.

Alastair has been an outspoken Diversity Champion in the UK, helping change policy and understanding for the Ministry of Defence since 2013, working on high profile projects and presentations.

Alastair was awarded the MBE in 2023 from the King’s first New Year’s Honours list for “over a decade of diversity changes and understanding for the Ministry of Defence”, presented at Windsor Castle by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne.

He works with two national charities, Fighting With Pride, who work towards securing government reparations, and support for the British victims of discharge from the armed forces who were LGB or T before the ban was lifted in 2000.

He is a diversity role model, working actively in UK schools to tackle homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, as well as in a UK Department for Education project tackling the bullying found in UK schools that is faced by anyone with differences.
